Meet Zach!

From Stray to Shelter to Service

Zach
Zach in his Delta Society Volunteer Vest
Zach serves as a volunteer, visiting nursing home residents and brightening their lives with his happy face and wagging tail. He and his mom Karen are a registered Pet Partner Team with Delta Society, an organization dedicated to strengthening the human animal bond.

When not volunteering, Zach loves to chase balls, run along trails, snuggle with his parents, and wag his long tail.

Zach’s life wasn’t always so happy. In October 2008 he was found living on the street in Los Angeles. He was hungry and underweight. Poor nutrition had caused some of his hair to fall out, and what hair he did have was hopelessly tangled.

At the county animal shelter, Zach developed a respiratory infection and would likely have been euthanized—then his luck changed. He met his guardian angel, a woman named Cathy Stanley who founded the animal rescue group, Camp Cocker.

Cathy took Zach to the vet and a groomer, and welcomed him to Camp Cocker. There, perhaps for the first time in his life, he enjoyed good food, clean water, a safe, comfy place to sleep, and LOTS of tennis balls! In December 2008, Zach said goodbye to his rescuers and Camp Cocker friends, and flew to his new, forever home.

Eighteen months after living as a scared, stray dog on the street, Zach passed the final Delta Society evaluation test and earned his place among Delta’s registered human-animal volunteer teams making a positive difference in people’s lives. The kindness he discovered at Camp Cocker he now shares with seniors no longer able to live in their own home.

Pets are an important part of many people’s lives.
